Military families honored with award winning commemorative cookbook

Down Home Delicious® cookbook partnered with military organizations to honor and celebrate families of fallen soldiers and those currently deployed to war zones in gratitude for their sacrifices for our country.

Because we believe the world owes our military families a large debt of gratitude, cookbook author Peggy Touchtone Sholly and her husband, 35 year retired Army Col. Robert Sholly, designated over 3,400 copies of her cookbook as free commemorative copies for presentation to family members at book signings and other venues. We are grateful to organizations such as Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County, Military Moms of Texas, and Operation We are There, FRG, Army Wife, and other Facebook pages who assisted with the giveaway of several thousand books. This is a very personal way for the Sholly’s to give back to our troops and raise public awareness of the military family’s participation in their loved ones service to our nation.

Families of deployed or fallen soliders who live in the Angleton, Texas area can stop by Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County and pick up a free copy of the commemorative cookbook, and maybe stay a while to visit or volunteer. Check out

“My husband knows what it’s like to have his family in the States while he’s away,” Peggy Sholly said, “and the sacrifices they make for our country, the largest sacrifice being the family of a fallen American Hero.”

Robert Sholly’s comment is that “In my career, when I was working in a hostile environment, I always knew when I was fine, but the family seldom knew what my day-to-day circumstances were. This made them the ones who had to live with worry, concern, uncertainty and fear on a continuing basis. It has been my experience that in spite of the daily uncertainty, the family support of their loved one(s) provides the strongest psychological base possible and enables the one deployed to be more confident and to focus on the here and now which is so important in combat situations.”

Rave reviews from new owners testify to the fact that not only is the cookbook replete with mouth-watering comfort food but that it is a good read filled with wit and wisdom, a treasure to be passed down within families. The colorful cookbook cover is a retro romance depiction reminding all that love and home cooked foods are synonymous.

All recipes are Sholly family and friends favorites but a few particular favorites are the pastas, salsas, soups, and Cajun inspired dishes plus the world-class carrot cake, Italian fig cookies and Itty Bitty pecan tarts. You can check out a few of the reviews at or
